Why Shower Waterproofing Failure Is the #1 Renovation Risk

A shower is the one room in your home where a mistake doesn’t show up right away — it shows up two, five, or ten years later, and by then it’s usually behind the wall. Water that gets past the tile and into the substrate doesn’t dry out on its own. It sits there, feeds mould growth, and slowly breaks down whatever’s holding your shower together, whether that’s wood framing, subfloor, or the tile itself.

By the time most homeowners notice a problem — a soft spot on the floor, a musty smell, grout that keeps cracking no matter how often it’s redone — the damage is already structural. What should have been a straightforward shower renovation turns into a full demolition and rebuild. This is exactly why we treat waterproofing as the actual product we’re building, not a step we rush through to get to the tile.

Our Waterproof Shower Build Process

Design Consultation & Layout

We start by discussing tile, drain placement, niches, and glass options with you, then measure the space precisely so your quote reflects the real job.

Substrate & Membrane Installation

We install cement board or an equivalent waterproof substrate, then apply your chosen membrane system — 3 to 4 layers deep — sealing every seam, corner, and penetration before moving forward. Ask about subfloor and joist strengthening

Tile Setting, Niches & Drains

Tile is set with laser alignment for consistent joints, niches are finished flush with the surrounding wall, and your linear or standard drain is set to the correct slope for full drainage.

Final Inspection & 5-Year Warranty

We walk the finished shower with you before we call the job done. Every waterproof shower build is backed by a 5-year written warranty — a guarantee we can make because of the substrate and membrane work that happens before the tile ever goes on.

What's Behind Your Tile — Our Waterproofing System

Tile is what you see. Waterproofing is what makes sure you never have to think about what’s behind it again.

Substrate Prep — Why We Don't Use Greenboard

Greenboard — the moisture-resistant drywall that was once the standard behind shower tile — resists moisture, but it isn’t waterproof. It fails in constant wet conditions and behind cracked grout, which is exactly where a shower spends its whole life. We build on cement board or a comparable waterproof substrate every time, because a shower that only resists water isn’t the same as a shower that’s actually protected from it.

Membrane Systems We Install (Wedi, Schluter, Prova)

We use 3 or 4 layers of waterproofing depending on the scope and your budget, built around industry-recognized membrane systems including Wedi, Schluter, and Prova. These sheet-applied and foam-backed systems create a continuous waterproof plane behind the tile — meaning the water never actually touches your substrate, your framing, or your subfloor, no matter how the grout holds up over time.    See our full tile setting process

Sealing Seams, Corners & Penetrations

Most waterproofing failures don’t happen in the middle of a wall — they happen at the seams, inside corners, and around plumbing penetrations, where two surfaces meet and a gap can open up over time. We treat every one of these transition points individually, sealing and reinforcing them before a single tile goes on, because a membrane is only as good as its weakest joint.

Built-In Features of Every Waterproof Shower

Linear Drains

A linear drain runs along one edge of the shower floor instead of sitting in the centre, which lets us slope the entire floor in a single direction. That means fewer cuts, a cleaner tile layout, and a floor that drains faster and more evenly than a traditional centre drain.

Custom Niches

A built-in niche gives you a place for shampoo and soap without a shelf caddy rusting in the corner. Because niches cut directly into the wall, they need their own dedicated waterproofing treatment at every internal corner — we build that into the membrane system from the start rather than trying to patch around it later.

Mitre-Cut Seams

Where tile meets at an inside corner, a mitre cut joins two pieces at a clean 45-degree angle instead of showing a visible edge. It’s a small detail, but it’s the difference between a shower that looks assembled and one that looks like it was always meant to be there.

Shower Glass & Door Options

We supply and install custom shower glass and doors to match your finished space, from a simple fixed panel to a fully framed enclosure — sized and ordered to fit the exact shower we’ve built, not a stock size you have to work around

What Affects the Cost of a Waterproof Shower Build?

  • Custom vs. prefab — a fully custom build takes more layout and cutting than a prefabricated shower base
  • Membrane system — sheet-applied, foam-backed, and liquid-applied systems vary in material and labour cost
  • Tile format and pattern — large-format tile and intricate layouts add time
  • Linear drain vs. standard drain — linear drains involve additional sloping and cutting work
  • Glass and door package — fixed panels, framed enclosures, and custom sizing all price differently
  • Room size and access — tight bathrooms or limited access can add labour time      We provide a detailed quote after seeing the space in person, so the number in your written quote is the number you pay.

Frequently Asked Questions

Greenboard is moisture-resistant drywall — it holds up to occasional dampness but isn't built for constant wet exposure. A waterproof membrane, like Wedi, Schluter, or Prova, creates a continuous waterproof barrier behind the tile that stops water before it ever reaches your substrate or framing.

Most custom waterproof shower builds take 1 to 2 weeks, depending on size, tile complexity, and whether niches, linear drains, or custom glass are included.

We build with industry-recognized systems including Wedi, Schluter, and Prova, applying 3 to 4 layers depending on the scope of your project.

No — a linear drain is a design and drainage choice, not a requirement. It allows for a single-slope floor and a cleaner tile layout, but a traditional centre drain is just as watertight when properly installed.

Yes — every waterproof shower we build is backed by a 5-year written warranty.
